Have you ever felt like your prayers need to be long, or filled with “perfect” words to be heard? It is easy to feel intimidated when we talk to God, especially if we compare ourselves to others. But the truth about prayer is often much simpler, more accessible, and far more beautiful than we imagine. As Psalm 145:18 reminds us, “The Lord is nigh unto all that call upon him, To all that call upon him in truth.”
Prayer is not about using fancy language or impressing God with our vocabulary. It is simply a conversation between a child and a Father who loves him deeply. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray (Matthew 6:5-13), He gave them a simple example, not complex rule or a checklist of requirements. He warned against empty phrases, reminding us that our Father knows what we need before we ask Him. He wants our hearts, not just our words.
Think of prayer like calling a best friend or a loving parent. You don’t prepare a formal speech before you dial the number; you just speak from your heart. You can tell God about your worries, your joys, your frustrations, and even your doubts. He isn’t looking for a perfect performance; He is looking for a genuine connection. As 1 Peter 5:7 encourages us, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” He wants to hear about your day, the things that made you smile, and the things that are keeping you awake at night.
The beauty of simple prayer is that it changes us. It lifts the burden from our shoulders and places it into God’s capable hands. We don’t always need a quiet room, a church building, or a specific posture to pray. While these are important, we can talk to Him while driving to work, while washing dishes, or in the quiet moments before you fall asleep.
If you don’t know where to start, try this simple prayer based on Psalm 19:14: “Lord, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Help me to see You in the small moments.” You might be surprised at how much peace a simple, honest conversation can bring to your heart.
